My Leadership Journey

It starts here

New Year?!

Today is the 15th of the 1st month in Chinese lunar calendar; it is also the Chinese Valentine's Day, so happy Chinese Valentine's Day. After the 15th, the celebration of the new year will end according to the Chinese tradition. Hence, when you meet somebody at the street, you are not bound to say "Kuong Hei Fat Choi" or wish them wealth and luck. Of course, you can still do it if you like and that's the point I want to make here today. Expressiong our love, support, and care should not be limited to time; we do not need to wait for another chinese new year to say something nice or to do something nice to the one we like. We should indeed do it whenever we can, just like give somebody a hug.

I find an interesting video of FREE HUGS CAMPAIGN in Macau at youtube.

"Sometimes, a hug is all what we need.
Free hugs is a real life controversial story of Juan Mann, A man whose sole mission was to reach out and hug a stranger to brighten up their lives. In this age of social disconnectivity and lack of human contact, the effects of the Free Hugs campaign became phenomenal." Cited from Free Hugs Campaign Home

You may say this thing won't happen in Macao or China but it really did happen at 2007 at Senardo Square.

I really think that this thing should happen more in Macao and we should do things like this more - to show our love, care and support towards others. This is also the thing I am trying to do more as an excellent leader always shows his appreciation, encouragement, love, and support to others without signs of scare and intimidation. Indeed, my mum said, "You has said 'thank you' a lot of times today." Isn't is a good beginning?

Sharing Session with Dr. Jose Chui

Today we all HC students spent a wonderful afternoon with Dr. Jose Chui Seng Pan, who gave us a talk about urban planning and the planning in Macao and shared some secrets of being competitive in the global market. In due course, I will talk about some of my thoughts about this sharing session.
W
hat I agree with Dr. Chui is that urban planning/city planning is not an idea just about the economic development and the physical environment but also about the citizens. Indeed, I think the behaviour of the citizens plays a very important role in urban planning. No matter how beautiful the city is, no matter how many facilities the city has, a wonderful city still needs its citizens to behave and act in a certain standard.

I
n the last semester, my fellow communications classmates and I did a research about parking space in Macao. We had a field trip at the area of Border Gate and found out that a lot of motorcycles and cars were put at the illegal parking space. We had interviews with some of the drivers for their behaviour, and some revealed that they did this because there was not enough legal parking space while some told us that they did this because it was convenient. From this field trip, I know that even though the government may provide the citizens with enough legal parking space through thorough city planning, some of the drivers will still park their vehicles illegally obstructing the pedestrians for their own convenience. What the government should do is not only about improving the physical surrounding but also educating the citizens about the responsibility of a law-abiding citizen. This case can also apply to the urban planning of a city - a good urban planning includes the education of the citizens about their social responsibility and their rights.

B
esides, Dr. Jose also gave us some advice about being more competitive in the global market as globalization is an invincible phenomenon. I agree with him about the part that we should keep our body and mind healthy and sharp for the competition. For me, I am a night owl (a late sleeper) and I usually sleep after 1a.m. for school days and after 2 a.m. for non-school days. Generally, I don’t think I sleep enough. Thus, maybe it’s high time for me to have a healthier habit, to sleep more.

F
inally, I believe what Dr. Jose said about luck. A person’s success may not fullly depend on luck but somehow it depends on it. For instance, there are a lot of singers who sing well and practice a lot but there are only some of them becoming famous. Just like what Dr. Jose said today, it is about luck whether we want to face it or not. Hence, what can we do? I think we should just prepare ourselves better by broadening our visions, nurturing our critical, creative and innovative thinking, acquiring knowledge from different perspectives and so on. Then when the luck comes, we can seize it and utilize it as our armour is sharpened.

C
atch up with you later!

Retreat at Macao Tower

It’s been quite a long time since my last update as I was busy during the last few days for some work and preparation and celebration for Lunar New Year. Anyways, I will talk about my field trip at Macao Tower at 6 Feb 2010 in this entry.
The weather at that day was not exactly the weather for field trips or outdoor activities – it was windy, cloudy and rainy. At first, I thought that the atmosphere of this excursion would be dampened and it would have been less interesting and funny. Nevertheless, the result of this excursion had turned out to be better than I thought. It is mainly due to the direct and active participation of the students, my fellows and of course, me, and the help of the HC staff and the AJ Hackett staff. I am grateful for all of us creating an enjoyable and unforgettable experience. To highlight this experience, I will talk about the skywalk and the sport climbing in due course.

Actually, I consider myself as a frequent visitor to Macao Tower comparing to my fellow classmates. I have been to Macao Tower 2 or 3 times this year excluding this excursion for watching film or sightseeing at Floor 58 and 61. Yet, I have never tried those extreme sports although I have been longing for those for a long time. This excursion gave me an opportunity and I found out that the feeling is different from just roaming inside the tower and “skywalking” outside the tower. It seems more real and relaxed and closer to the nature for me during the skywalk. During that half an hour, I felt free and liberated. Also, it seems like my troubles and worries were lifted up. I did not need to do anything except cherishing the moment I had. It’s superb! Furthermore, Macao is actually a beautiful place. Even though I only caught a few glimpses of Macao at that day owing to the weather, I could still find its blurred landscaped adorable. It’s a different kind of beauty and appreciation. Thus, I really think that we should spend more time to enjoy and protect the beautiful place we have.

The next thing I want to talk about is the sport climbing. It is not the first time I have tried that. It is my second time – I had tried it once at the sport arena at UMAC. These 2 tries ended up with the same result – I could not climb to the top and ring the bell. Nonetheless, I did not feel bad for myself; instead, I felt good. I thought I was improved as I climbed much higher this time. If you compare my result to my other classmates’ result, mine may seem a little bit lame. However, it is meaningless to compare with others, right? Somebody can climb to the top at the first try; someone may do it within ten tries; some people may need a hundred times. The point is everyone is different and unique, and everyone has his or her own pace, strength and weakness. What we need to do is to try our best and have no regret. Hence, I am proud of myself as I have tried my best. I don’t know how many times I need to climb to the top and ring the bell but I have faith in myself. Even though I may not reach the top in my whole life, I still have claps from people, who love and support me, and respect from them and … me. Then I really don’t have any regret.

That’s all I want to say. Catch up with you later. Happy New Year!

1st Lecture

Hello, this is the first entry of this blog. Including this blog, I have more than 4 web logs. By the way, a lot of different assignments, projects, and other work are waiting for me. So don’t expect me to update it daily. You may ask what the difference is between this space and the others. Well, it is appropriate to say that this blog is used to chronicle the growth and the development of my leadership skills, together with some thoughts and reflections. More importantly, it is a kind of homework. No choice?
B
elow are some reflections after the first class of development of leadership skills at 3 February 2010.

I
f you ask me what things or what images I still have after class, I’ll definitely say that it is the game of using chopsticks to transfer a ping-pong ball. This game seems to be easy but this is not true once we started to play. Even if one has mastered the skills of using chopsticks, his or her team will still not be guaranteed to win because the success of this game depends on the cooperation and collaboration of the team members. Everyone plays an equal role in this mission: the game will only end unless the ball has been passed through all the members in the team. This game shows the importance of team spirit. Moreover, different people have different habits and techniques in using chopsticks, so it takes time for us to adapt the differences. Yet, this does not cause much trouble inasmuch as all of us are working towards the same goal – passing the ping-pong ball. We accept that we are different but we are working collaboratively to overcome this barrier under the same aim and vision. That’s what leaders should do. As long as the team members are having the same goal and vision, the leaders should not require or expect their team members to work and carry out instructions in the exactly same way. Otherwise, what’s the difference between human beings and machines?

T
he next impressive thing I reminisce is a video shown in the class. One video is about Nick Vujicic, a man without any limb, giving a lecture to the high-school students. I am really impressed by the determination and perseverance of Vujicic that he does not give up even though he has been going through a lot of difficulties. He fells, gets up and tries again. He also tries to use his own method to spread love, and his own thoughts and notions around the world. Not only should a leader be like this, but also should everyone be the same.

T
hese probably wrap up what I want to say, and more will be coming on throughout the semester. Catch up with you later!
