Below are some reflections after the first class of development of leadership skills at 3 February 2010.
If you ask me what things or what images I still have after class, I’ll definitely say that it is the game of using chopsticks to transfer a ping-pong ball. This game seems to be easy but this is not true once we started to play. Even if one has mastered the skills of using chopsticks, his or her team will still not be guaranteed to win because the success of this game depends on the cooperation and collaboration of the team members. Everyone plays an equal role in this mission: the game will only end unless the ball has been passed through all the members in the team. This game shows the importance of team spirit. Moreover, different people have different habits and techniques in using chopsticks, so it takes time for us to adapt the differences. Yet, this does not cause much trouble inasmuch as all of us are working towards the same goal – passing the ping-pong ball. We accept that we are different but we are working collaboratively to overcome this barrier under the same aim and vision. That’s what leaders should do. As long as the team members are having the same goal and vision, the leaders should not require or expect their team members to work and carry out instructions in the exactly same way. Otherwise, what’s the difference between human beings and machines?
The next impressive thing I reminisce is a video shown in the class. One video is about Nick Vujicic, a man without any limb, giving a lecture to the high-school students. I am really impressed by the determination and perseverance of Vujicic that he does not give up even though he has been going through a lot of difficulties. He fells, gets up and tries again. He also tries to use his own method to spread love, and his own thoughts and notions around the world. Not only should a leader be like this, but also should everyone be the same.
These probably wrap up what I want to say, and more will be coming on throughout the semester. Catch up with you later!
