My Leadership Journey

It starts here

Sharing Session with Dr. Jose Chui

Today we all HC students spent a wonderful afternoon with Dr. Jose Chui Seng Pan, who gave us a talk about urban planning and the planning in Macao and shared some secrets of being competitive in the global market. In due course, I will talk about some of my thoughts about this sharing session.
W
hat I agree with Dr. Chui is that urban planning/city planning is not an idea just about the economic development and the physical environment but also about the citizens. Indeed, I think the behaviour of the citizens plays a very important role in urban planning. No matter how beautiful the city is, no matter how many facilities the city has, a wonderful city still needs its citizens to behave and act in a certain standard.

I
n the last semester, my fellow communications classmates and I did a research about parking space in Macao. We had a field trip at the area of Border Gate and found out that a lot of motorcycles and cars were put at the illegal parking space. We had interviews with some of the drivers for their behaviour, and some revealed that they did this because there was not enough legal parking space while some told us that they did this because it was convenient. From this field trip, I know that even though the government may provide the citizens with enough legal parking space through thorough city planning, some of the drivers will still park their vehicles illegally obstructing the pedestrians for their own convenience. What the government should do is not only about improving the physical surrounding but also educating the citizens about the responsibility of a law-abiding citizen. This case can also apply to the urban planning of a city - a good urban planning includes the education of the citizens about their social responsibility and their rights.

B
esides, Dr. Jose also gave us some advice about being more competitive in the global market as globalization is an invincible phenomenon. I agree with him about the part that we should keep our body and mind healthy and sharp for the competition. For me, I am a night owl (a late sleeper) and I usually sleep after 1a.m. for school days and after 2 a.m. for non-school days. Generally, I don’t think I sleep enough. Thus, maybe it’s high time for me to have a healthier habit, to sleep more.

F
inally, I believe what Dr. Jose said about luck. A person’s success may not fullly depend on luck but somehow it depends on it. For instance, there are a lot of singers who sing well and practice a lot but there are only some of them becoming famous. Just like what Dr. Jose said today, it is about luck whether we want to face it or not. Hence, what can we do? I think we should just prepare ourselves better by broadening our visions, nurturing our critical, creative and innovative thinking, acquiring knowledge from different perspectives and so on. Then when the luck comes, we can seize it and utilize it as our armour is sharpened.

C
atch up with you later!
